Elgin origins, The Clash and working with Jamie Holmes: Fanatic meets The Zebecks

Indie quartet The Zebecks share their thoughts on brand new single ‘Killing Time’ ahead of a sold out performance at King Tut’s on August 18th.

Being only the second single release from the Elgin-formed four-piece, The Zebecks comment on their musical influences involved throughout the writing process:

The initial influence for our new single Killing Time came from witnessing Glasgow’s vibrant culture firsthand as outsiders. The lyrics were inspired by the stories and encounters we experienced while exploring the city. Sonically, the song began as a slow reggae jam which came from our appreciation of The Police’s first albums. Our frontman Dan was influenced by his love of Jamie T and the fast-spoken, lyrical style he is known for. Combining these influences, the song then evolved into a sound akin to The Clash, another artist who inspires us heavily.”

Teaming up with producer Jamie Holmes again was a no brainer after the success of debut track ‘Breakthrough’. The boys mention Holmes’ impact in terms of creating a specific energy influenced by The Clash during the recording session:

“We worked with Jamie Holmes for the second time at the Castle of Doom Studios. After sharing our concept of a Clash inspired production he was really keen to work with this and suggested recording the bass and drums live together to recreate their recording style. This helped to capture the desired energy we wanted in the song as it is very driven by the rhythm section. After nailing a vocal take, Hayden laughed which is still present in the final mix. It was Jamie who advocated leaving this in as he felt it added to the vibe of the song, we agreed. Overall he played an integral part in bringing our vision to life and we look forward to getting back in the studio with him.”

Evident from just two songs, The Zebecks seem to have a strong notion of how they want to progress. With a wide range of genres credited in their influences catalogue, The Zebecks are keen to display this diversity with each release demonstrating a slightly different side to the band.

Up next for the lads is King Tut’s tonight (Friday 18th August) supporting Spiral Cities alongside The Invaines and Weekends Away. Playing a sold out show at a venue as iconic as Tut’s tied with the release of their second single will be an immensely exciting time, with the group anticipating ‘Killing Time’ to go down a treat.

When asked what audiences can expect from The Zebecks live at King Tut’s, they responded:

“King Tut’s will be our finest performance yet. Expect a set that takes you on a journey from the idyllic heart of the Highlands to the gritty streets of Glasgow. We poured a lot of emotion into crafting this show and we look forward to sharing that with the audience. See you all down the front.”

If you were lucky enough to grab a ticket for tonights show before it sold out, see you then.
